Wondae-ri Birch Forest (원대리 자작나무 숲) is an ecological tourism site in Gangwon, formed by planting 690,000 birch trees over 138 hectares between 1974 and 1995. Visitors reach the forest on foot from the entrance information center. The site has seven trails along with a forest classroom, an observation deck, an ecological pond, a "teepee" structure, wooden bridges, and wooden steps.

Trails and access

Two main forest roads lead to the birch stands: Wonjeong-imdo, about 80 minutes on foot, and Wondae-imdo, about 60 minutes. Along the trails, the forest includes birch trees more than 20 years old growing densely together. Visitors can choose from trails of varying length and difficulty. The most popular is Course 1 (the Birch Course), about 0.9 kilometers and roughly 50 minutes, which passes through the area with the densest concentration of birch trees.

Seasonal character

The forest's white trunks and shining leaves give it a snow-like appearance, and the trees growing straight up toward the sky give the forest an exotic feel. In winter, snow-covered ground combined with the white bark makes the forest a popular spot for photography. Families with young children can take part in nature-themed activities at the toddler forest experience area, including the forest classroom and the teepee structure.
