Must-visitNatureBeach/Coast

A coastal cliff formation of layered sandstone at the foot of Sanbangsan on Jeju.

Yongmeorihaean Coast sits directly below Sanbangsan, reached by walking down from the Sanbangsan rest area. The cliffs are made of sandstone layers built up over tens of millions of years and shaped further by wave action. A narrow, flat wave-cut platform runs along the base of the cliffs and doubles as a walking path around the coast, though access is closed during rough weather or high tide.

Rock Formations and the Legend of the Name

The cliffs include small hollows resembling rooms as well as broader eroded rock stretches, and the path along the water curves in a wave-like line. The name Yongmeori, meaning "dragon's head," comes from the shape of the headland, said to resemble a dragon raising its head as it enters the sea. According to legend, Qin Shi Huang recognized the site as a landform destined to produce a king and sent Hu Zong-dan to cut the dragon's tail and back with a sword, causing it to bleed while Sanbangsan cried out in pain for several days afterward.

Along the Coastal Path

Walking along the sandstone shoreline, visitors pass an area where haenyeo (female divers) set up stalls to sell seafood. A monument to Hendrick Hamel stands at the entrance to Yongmeorihaean. The coast was also used as a filming location for the drama "Alchemy of Souls," in scenes where the character Jang Uk searches for Mu-deok.
