Must-visitNatureLake/River/Waterfall

A volcanic valley pool on Jeju Island where a freshwater stream meets the sea.

Soesokkak is a landform in Hahyo-dong, Seogwipo, on Jeju Island, centered on the point where the stream Hyodoncheon meets the ocean. The stream's course was shaped by an old lava flow, and the mixing of fresh and salt water there creates a brackish pool bordered by volcanic rock and pine trees. Visitors come for kayaking and traditional raft rides, and the site sits between routes 5 and 6 of the Jeju Olle Trail.

Name and Formation

The name comes from the Jeju language. The area was originally called "Soedun" (쇠둔) because its shape resembled a cow lying down. "Soesokkak" (쇠소깍) literally means "cow pool end": "soe" refers to a cow, "so" to a pool, and "kkak" to an end. The valley itself formed as flowing lava hardened into the channel that Hyodoncheon now follows.

Landscape and Surroundings

The stream is lined on both sides with dense plant life, including many pine trees, alongside unusual volcanic rock formations, some of which have been given individual names based on their shape. The area has a mix of deep and shallow pools and covers a total area of 47,130 square meters. It was designated a Scenic Site of South Korea by the Cultural Heritage Administration on June 30, 2011. Hahyo-dong, at the southern foot of Hallasan, is also known as a citrus-growing area. The Soesokkak Beach Festival has been held nearby since 2003, and other sites in the area include a columnar jointing formation, Jungmun Beach, and Cheonjeyeon Falls.
