A small island off Tongyeong known for its rock formations and a tidal path to a lighthouse islet.

Somaemuldo (소매물도) is a small island in the sea southeast of Tongyeong harbor. It falls under the administrative jurisdiction of Tongyeong but sits closer to Geoje Island, and it is designated part of the Geoje district of Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park. The island consists of a main section, where the harbor and pension guesthouses are clustered, and Deungdaeseom (등대섬, "Lighthouse Island"), a smaller islet connected to the main island twice a day when the tide goes out.

Tidal Path to Deungdaeseom

At low tide, twice daily, a path of large and small rounded pebbles is exposed between Somaemuldo and Deungdaeseom, allowing visitors to walk across to the lighthouse islet. The rock formations and sheer cliffs on both Somaemuldo and Deungdaeseom are described as the area's scenic highlight. Viewed from Deungdaeseom, the jagged rock formations of Somaemuldo are said to resemble the shape of a large seated dinosaur.

Named Rock Formations

Somaemuldo has a number of named rock formations, including Yongbawi (Dragon Rock), Bucheobawi (Buddha Rock), Geobukbawi (Turtle Rock), Chotdaebawi (Candlestick Rock), and the sea cave Geulssingigul. Other named features on the island include Nammaebawi (Brother-and-Sister Rock), Gongnyongbawi (Dinosaur Rock), Byeongpungbawi (Folding-Screen Rock), Sangeodonggul (Shark Cave), and the summit of Mangtaebong.
