RecommendedNatureBeach/Coast

A quiet, unofficial silver-sand beach on Jeju's southeast coast.

Sogeummak Beach (소금막해변) sits on the southeast coast of Jeju Island. It is not an officially designated swimming beach, so there are no lifeguards during the summer swimming season, and rental shops or convenience stores are not close by, so visitors need to bring their own swimming gear and food.

Sand, Water, and Marine Life

The beach has a silver sand shore with a gentle slope and warm water, which makes it popular with families who bring children to play in the water. The sand is described as clean and fine. Whelks and sea urchins can be caught along the shore.

Name and Local History

The beach is also known as Geomeun-yeo Baeksajang. Black rock formations extend along both sides of the sandy area, and the strip of sand between these black rocks (called geomeun-yeo) is what came to be called Sogeummak Beach. On the eastern side of the shore is Sogeummak Bulteok, a site where local residents once produced salt from seawater.

Surfing and Sunset

The beach tends to have waves, drawing surfers, and kitesurfers can also be seen there. The sunset is described as spectacular: from autumn through winter it sets behind Hallasan, while from spring through summer it sets over the sea. The beach lies along Olle Trail Course 3, and there is an Olle rest area and restrooms at the entrance for trail walkers. Changing rooms and showers operate on a limited basis during the summer season.
