A lone 20-meter rock pillar rising from the sea at the start of Jeju Olle Trail Course 7.

Oedolgae is a rock pillar standing about 20 meters tall in the sea off Jeju Island, at the starting point of Olle Trail Course 7. Its name, meaning "lone rock," comes from the way it stands by itself in the water. It is also known by the names Janggunseok (General Rock) and Halmang Bawi (Grandmother Rock).

Names and Legends

The name Janggunseok comes from a legend involving General Choe Yeong, who is said to have dressed the rock up to look like a soldier while fighting Yuan dynasty forces, tricking the enemy into defeating themselves. The name Halmang Bawi refers to a separate local legend tied to the rock. Beyond the rock formation itself, the site reflects how Jeju islanders once waited by the sea for those out on the water.
