A combined botanical garden and public park in Seoul's Magok district.
Seoul Botanic Park (서울식물원) was built on Magok, the last undeveloped area remaining in Seoul, to introduce plants and plant culture from twelve cities around the world and to raise ecological awareness in the city. Described as a "botanic park" because it combines a botanical garden with a public park, it covers an area equivalent to about 70 soccer fields.
Layout and Zones
The park is divided into four main areas: Open Forest, Lake Garden, Wetland Garden, and Theme Garden, each with its own character. Within the Theme Garden stands the park's exhibition greenhouse, built in the shape of a concave dish, said to be the only one of its kind in the world. The greenhouse displays plants native to twelve cities in tropical and Mediterranean climates, allowing visitors to experience the plants and plant culture characteristic of each climate zone.
Research and Conservation Role
Beyond public display, the park functions as a plant research and conservation institution. It works to expand habitats for endangered wild plant species and supports research into propagating species that are difficult to breed, alongside cultivar development. It also serves as a base for spreading urban gardening culture and operates as a lifelong education facility, tied to the city's "Garden City, Seoul" initiative built around the concepts of openness, connection, ecology, and sensitivity.
