A large riverside park in Seongdong District built on the site of a former water plant.

Seoul Forest (서울숲) is a large park in Seongdong District, Seoul, located in the Seongsu-dong neighborhood along the Han River. It opened in June 2005, and the city government spent 235.2 billion won on its development. The park is free to enter and open year-round, and it is the third largest park in Seoul, covering about 1,200 hectares and planted with more than 420,000 trees and home to 100 different animals.

From Royal Hunting Ground to Water Plant

It was once used as a royal hunting forest, then became Seoul's first water purification plant in 1908. In the 1940s the surrounding area operated as an amusement park, and a race course was built there in 1954. In 2005 the park was newly opened after converting the former Ttukseom Sports Park area into a large urban forest; construction began in 2004 and was completed in June 2005. Seoul Forest Park is also noted as the first park in Seoul shaped by citizen participation, from its initial planning through its ongoing programs.

Four Themed Sections

The park is organized into four distinct areas: a Cultural Art Park, an Experiential Learning Park, an Ecological Forest, and a Wetlands Ecological Field, alongside a waterside park along the Han River. The Wetlands Ecological Field contains more than 40 species of roses, fish, and wetland plants such as reeds, silver banner grass, and rose-gold pussy willow, along with water plants like water chestnut and floating moss. This wetlands section also includes an insect garden and an outdoor nature classroom for children.
