Travel Map: Seoul
Seoul Forest | 서울숲
New York has Central Park, London has Hyde Park, and Seoul has Seoul Forest
Introduction
Seoul Forest is a large public park on the eastern side of the city, right next to the trendy Seongsu neighborhood. It mixes open green space, tree-lined paths, a small deer enclosure, and a butterfly garden into one easy, walkable area. Locals treat it as an everyday retreat rather than a special outing, and it works well in any season.
Worth Visiting?
If you want a break from the dense city streets then this is the place for you. It is perfect when paired with Seongsu and works well in any season. Skip only if you are very short on time or already planning to visit a larger nature area outside Seoul. It is not dramatic or monumental but a perfect place to see where locals come to slow down.
Highlights
Animals
One of Seoul Forest’s most charming features is the deer enclosure. It is small and simple, but unexpectedly calming to see animals so close to the city. It’s great for families, but even adults tend to linger longer than expected here.
Butterfly Garden
The butterfly atrium is a lowkey favorite. Inside, you will find live butterflies, plants, and a humid greenhouse atmosphere that feels completely separate from Seoul. It is not large, but it is peaceful and especially nice in spring and early summer.
The Butterfly Garden is only open from May-Oct: 10:00-17:00.
Closed on Mondays.
Seasonal Beauties
Cherry blossom season (late March to early April)
Seoul Forest becomes one of the most popular blossom viewing spots in eastern Seoul. It is less formal than Yeouido and feels more spread out, making it easier to enjoy without being shoulder to shoulder with everyone. Although you will find lines sometimes where tourists are trying to get the perfect Instagram photo.
Autumn foliage (October to early November)
Fall is arguably the best time to visit. Gingko trees, maples, and wide paths turn golden and red, and the park feels calm and very cinematic.
Events, Markets, and Picnics
Outdoor Markets and Pop-Ups
On weekends, especially in the warmer months, you may run into small outdoor markets selling handmade goods, art prints, accessories, and snacks. These are usually temporary and not heavily advertised, so they feel spontaneous rather than scheduled.
Seasonal Festivals
The park has hosted flower-themed events, eco-focused exhibitions, and community festivals tied to both spring and fall. These are typically low-key and family-friendly rather than large-scale concerts or fairs. It is also one of the spaces for the Seoul Outdoor Library, an open-air reading space, frequented by those who enjoy reading outdoors when the weather is good.
Picnic Culture
Picnic culture is a big part of Seoul Forest life. You will see groups with colorful mats, small tables, foldable chairs, takeaway food, and convenience store drinks. It is casual and very local, a popular pastime for all ages in the warmer months.
Local Tips
- Come in the late afternoon and stay through sunset for the best atmosphere, especially in autumn.
- Spring weekends get crowded, but the park is large enough to still find quiet corners here and there.
- Pair it with Seongsu for an easy half day plan, the two are in easy walkable distance.
- Bring snacks or coffee in. Sitting and doing nothing here is kind of part of the experience.
