A museum in Seoul commemorating Catholic martyrs, opened in 2019.
Seosomun Shrine History Museum (서소문성지역사박물관) commemorates Korean Catholics who were martyred during periods of persecution, and opened in June 2019. It sits inside Seosomun History Park in Seoul, with a permanent exhibition hall on the second basement level. Exhibits include works of art and displays related to the history of Catholic persecution in Korea, and every Thursday the museum offers a guided tour explaining the history of the Seosomun site and Korean Catholicism.
Hanul Gwangjang
A stairway leads down from the exhibition hall to the third basement level, where visitors reach an open space called Hanul Gwangjang (하늘광장, "Sky Plaza"). The plaza is a restrained, rectangular space defined mainly by sky, light, and straight lines, intended to evoke the somberness and grief associated with the persecution of Catholics. The space is also known for its architectural design and received the Grand Prize at the 2019 Seoul Architecture Awards.
