A large military history museum in Yongsan, Seoul, covering Korea's wars and the Korean War.
The War Memorial of Korea (전쟁기념관) is a museum in Yongsan-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, built on the former site of the army headquarters. It opened on June 10, 1994, with construction completed in December 1993, and was created to preserve records of Korea's wars and to memorialize those who died fighting for the country. The main building has three floors above ground and two below, covering about 20,000 square meters, and the nearest subway stop is Samgakji Station, exit 12.
Indoor and outdoor exhibits
The museum is organized into indoor and outdoor exhibition areas. Indoors there are seven halls, including the Memorial Hall, War History Room, Korean War Room, Expeditionary Forces Room, ROK Armed Forces Room, and Exhibition Hall for Donated Artifacts, showing weapons, equipment, and artifacts from prehistoric times through the modern period using dioramas, replicas, documentary paintings, and video displays. The Korean War Room focuses on the causes, course, and armistice of the war fought from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. Around 6,300 items are on display in total, including a full-sized replica of a turtle ship and vehicles once used by Syngman Rhee and Kim Il Sung. The outdoor area, set on the lawns around the building, displays about 100 large weapons and aircraft from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, including a K-1 tank, howitzers, missiles, helicopters, transport planes, and a Boeing B-52D Stratofortress, one of only three B-52s displayed outside the United States.
Memorial galleries and grounds
In the cloistered galleries on either side of the main building's facade, black marble monuments are inscribed with the names of more than 200,000 Korean and United Nations soldiers and police who died in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, clashes with North Korea, and related duty. The plaza in front of the museum has an artificial waterfall and rest areas, along with the Statue of Brothers, depicting an older South Korean soldier and a younger North Korean soldier, symbolizing the division of Korea. Other outdoor features include the Gwanggaeto Stele and a peace clock tower.
