RecommendedNatureBeach/Coast

The southernmost beach in South Korea, known for black volcanic sand and rock formations.

Sagye Beach (Sagye Haebyeon) is a beach in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, on Jeju Island. It sits just below Sanbangsan mountain and runs about 1 km, with much black volcanic sand. It is a small, quiet beach where swimming is not possible, and it is the southernmost beach in the country.

Volcanic rock and marine potholes

The beach has many volcanic rock formations, created by past eruptions and shaped over time by wind and waves. At low tide, unusual rock layers appear, along with holes worn into the stone that are known as marine potholes. Some visitors compare their look to craters on the moon. The beach is also experiencing gradual coastal erosion.

Views and surroundings

From Sagye Beach you can take in Sanbangsan and Hallasan mountains and the Yongmeori Coast, and there is a clear view across the water to the island of Hyeongjeseom. The beach forms part of Section 10 of the Jeju Olle Trail. Near the beach, boats can be hired at Sagye Harbor to fish around Hyeongjeseom, a spot anglers use for black sea bream along Jeju's southwestern coast. The nearby village is quiet and has small cafes.
