A double-crater volcano on Jeju Island's southern coast with wartime tunnels and coastal views.

Songaksan is a volcano on the southern coast of Jeju Island, made up of several large and small peaks around a main summit. It has double craters: a larger outer crater about 500 meters in diameter and 1.7 kilometers in circumference, and a smaller inner crater about 400 meters in diameter and 69 meters deep. From the summit and its observation platform, visitors can see Marado and Gapado islands, Hyeongjeseom (Brother Islands), Sanbangsan, Hallasan in the distance, and the Pacific Ocean.

Crater and terrain

The northwest side of the main peak is a broad, flat grassland with three or four additional peaks. The main crater still holds black and red volcanic ash. Forest cover is limited to a few areas of planted pines; the soil is arid and the ecosystem simple, with grazing having reduced plant growth. Perennial Artemisia and broomrape are typical plants found here. Songaksan lies along Jeju Olle Trail Route 10.

Wartime remains and fishing

During World War II, the Japanese army occupied Songaksan as a staging point for its invasion of China, leaving behind an airstrip, airship sheds, and 15 trenches cut into the coastal cliffs, along with several tunnels. The waters below the cliffs are known as a fishing spot for species such as black porgy, saw-edged perch, and grouper.
