A 24-hour wholesale and retail seafood market on the Han River in Seoul.
Noryangjin Fish Market is a large fish market in Noryangjin-dong, Dongjak District, Seoul, located just south of the Han River and east of the 63 Building. It sits near Noryangjin Station on Metro Line 1 (exit 1, under the bridge) and is open 24 hours a day. Both wholesale and retail dealings take place on site.
From Seoul Station to the Han River
The market began in 1927 as Gyeongseong Susan, on Uijuro near what is now Seoul Station. It moved to its current location in 1971, when a new wholesale market building was constructed in Noryangjin. In 2002, the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives (Suhyup) took over operation of the market and carried out a modernization project, turning it into a combined distribution and cultural site.
Trade and Auctions
Noryangjin handles about 50 percent of the seafood traded in the greater Seoul area, with roughly 250 to 300 tons of seafood passing through the market each day. Prices change daily depending on the volume brought in, and auction prices can be checked on the market's website; retail prices generally run about 10 to 20 percent higher than auction prices. Auctions at the market start at 1 a.m., with a live-fish auction held at 3 a.m.
