A traditional market in Seoul known for herbal medicine, ginseng, and street food.
Gyeongdong Market (경동시장) is a traditional market in Dongdaemun District, Seoul, near Jegi-dong Station on Subway Line 1. It formed on open ground near Cheongnyangni Station after the Korean War and was formally established in June 1960. It is one of the largest herbal medicine and ginseng markets in South Korea and also operates as a wholesale and retail market for agricultural products and fish.
Herbal Medicine Trade
Since 1960, Gyeongdong Market has supplied about 70 percent of the herbal medicine ingredients used in South Korea, with more than 1,000 related shops and oriental medicine clinics operating in the area. The overall market covers roughly 300,000 square meters, about five times the size of Seoul World Cup Stadium in Sangam, and includes wholesale and retail sections for agricultural goods and fish alongside the medicine trade.
Gyeongdong Theater and Food Stalls
A formerly disused cinema on the site, Gyeongdong Theater, has been converted into a cultural space that draws younger visitors. Food stalls throughout the market have been featured on television and other media, and both the food and the theater have contributed to a steady rise in visitors. The market stays busy with foot traffic on weekdays as well as weekends.
