Juwangsan National Park sits on a spur of the Taebaek mountain range in the southeastern part of the country, spanning Cheongsong and Yeongdeok counties in North Gyeongsang province. It was designated South Korea's 12th national park on March 30, 1976, and covers roughly 107 square kilometers. The main peak, Juwangsan, rises to 720.6 meters, with Taehaengsan (933.1m), Daedunsan (905m), and Gamebong (882.8m) also forming part of the park's ridgeline.

Rock Peaks and the Juwang Valley

Juwangsan is counted as one of Korea's three great rock mountains, shaped by numerous rock peaks and a deep, scenic valley. The Juwang Valley, which runs through the park, is lined with jagged rock formations that stand like a folding screen along the water. Named features along the valley include Hakso-dae, said to be where blue and white cranes once lived, and Geupsu-dae, a rock formation that leans forward as if about to topple. Other landmarks carry legends tied to a figure known as Juwang, including a rock outcrop where Juwang is said to have fought General Majang, Mangwol-dae where his son and daughter reportedly viewed the moon, and Juwang Cave, where Juwang is said to have hidden and died. The park also has waterfalls and natural spring water along the trail.

Other Attractions

The park is home to 88 plant species and 924 animal species. Additional sites within the park include Daejeonsa Temple, Jusanji Lake, the hermitages Juwangam and Baekryeonam, and Dalgi Waterfall. The Juwangsan Royal Azalea Festival is held annually in the first week of May.
