South Korea's first and largest national park, spanning three provinces in Jeolla and Gyeongsang.

Jirisan National Park sits on the boundaries of Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do, bordering the towns of Namwon, Gurye, and Hamyang. Designated in 1967, it was the first national park in South Korea and remains the country's largest terrestrial national park. The park covers a wide area across three provinces, one city, four counties, and fifteen towns and townships, and dozens of peaks form its ridgeline.

Terrain and Wildlife

The park's peaks connect in a long, rolling silhouette, with valleys, waterfalls, and pools that change character by season. The Seomjin River runs along Jirisan toward the south coast. Jirisan is home to a range of wildlife, including the Asiatic black bear, and the park runs a conservation program for the species along with a restoration program for areas damaged by overuse.

Visiting by Season

Jirisan looks different in each season, but conditions vary widely. Summer and winter bring heavy rain or snow, and sudden weather changes or wide temperature swings can restrict access to trails. Spring and fall are generally easier seasons to visit, though dry conditions in those months raise wildfire risk and can lead to temporary closures of some sections. Because the park is large with many possible routes, visitors are advised to plan ahead and check with the Korea National Park Service or one of the three Jirisan management offices before setting out.
