A convention and exhibition complex in Gangnam with an underground mall attached.

COEX is a convention and exhibition complex in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, that opened in March 1979. The name comes from "COnvention centers" and "EXhibition halls," and the complex includes four exhibition floors, 50 meeting rooms, a performance venue, and office space, run by the Korea International Trade Association (KITA). It sits at the intersection of Teheranno and Yeongdong-daero, next to Samseong Station on Seoul Subway Line 2 and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9, with Cheongdam Station on Line 7 and the World Trade Center Seoul also nearby.

Starfield COEX Mall

Attached to the convention center is Starfield COEX Mall (formerly COEX Mall), an underground shopping mall built between 1997 and 2000 at a cost of about 140 billion won. It was designed by the US firm RTKL, with Gensler later working on the space under the theme "Unfolding Sky." The mall covers about 154,000 square meters, with 144,000 square meters on a single underground floor, making it the world's largest underground shopping mall. A renovation announced in 2012 expanded the floor area and added a walkway linking Bongeunsa Station to Samseong Station; it was completed in November 2014. The mall has five plazas (Central, Live, Millennium, Asem, and Airport), and Millennium Square serves as its main exit toward Samseong Station. Besides its shops, the mall houses two food courts, the Megabox cinema, the COEX Aquarium, and a large bookstore. It is open year-round from 10:30 AM to 10:00 PM with free admission.

Starfield Library

Inside the mall is the Starfield Library (Byeolmadang Doseogwan), which holds 50,000 books and 600 magazines and also offers e-books. Books placed on its higher, unreachable shelves are decorative rather than real. The library doubles as an event space for talks, lectures, and concerts, and it appeared in the 2020 series "Record of Youth," starring Park Bo-gum.
