Highly RecommendedHistorical SiteConfucian Academy

The oldest surviving Confucian academy in Korea, founded in 1542 in Yeongju.

Sosuseowon (소수서원) is a Joseon-era seowon, a private Neo-Confucian academy, located in Sunheung-myeon, Yeongju, in the Gyeongsang region. It is the oldest extant seowon in Korea and was one of only 47 seowons that survived the mass abolishment ordered by Regent Heungseon Daewongun in 1871. The site began as a Buddhist temple before its conversion to an academy.

Chu Sebung and the first royal charter

The academy was established in 1542 by Chu Sebung, then magistrate of Punggi County, who built a shrine to honor Anhyang. A school hall was added the following year, 1543, and the site became known as Baegundong Seowon as it began educating students. In 1550, at the request of Punggi magistrate Yi Hwang, the academy received royal recognition and support under a new name, Sosu Seowon, making it the first officially chartered private academy in Korea. Ahn Chuk and Ahn Bo were added to the shrine's rites in 1544, and Chu Sebung himself was added in 1633.

Layout and buildings

Because it was built before the standard layout conventions for seowon architecture were established, the buildings within Sosuseowon are arranged relatively freely rather than in the more formal pattern seen at later academies. The Okgyesu, a stream connected to the Nakdong River and originating from Mt. Sobaek, runs along the right side of the entrance. Inside the auditorium hangs a sign reading "Sosu Seowon" engraved by King Myeongjong. Behind the auditorium stand the Jikbangjae, Ilshinjae, Hakgujae and Jirakjae halls. On the east side of the complex are the Seogo, a portrait of Anhyang painted at the end of the Goryeo dynasty (National Treasure No. 111), and the Munseong Tomb, which enshrines a painting of Confucius, the Daesungjisung King Munseon's Jeonjwado (National Treasure No. 485).
