Hapcheon Haeinsa Temple (Hapcheon Haeinsa Temple) is a representative temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, located at the foot of Gayasan Mountain in Gaya-myeon, Hapcheon County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province.
It is said to have been founded in 802 by the two monks, Suneung and Uijeong.
Haeinsa Temple is one of Korea’s three major temples and, situated within Gayasan National Park, boasts breathtaking natural scenery.
Haeinsa Temple’s most famous landmark is the Janggyeong Panjeon (Korean Buddhist scriptures) building, which houses the Tripitaka Koreana, designated National Treasure No. 32 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These are the world’s most perfectly preserved woodblock prints of Buddhist scriptures. Built in the 15th century, the Janggyeong Panjeon has preserved the woodblocks to this day thanks to specialized preservation techniques.
Haeinsa Temple is the headquarters of the 12th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and attracts numerous practitioners and visitors. It also actively offers temple stay programs and Buddhist cultural experience programs.
Free admission will be available starting in May 2023, making it even more accessible to a wider audience.
