Maemi Castle sits on the coast in Geoje. It was built by a local resident, Baek Sun-sam, after Typhoon Maemi destroyed his farmland in 2003. To protect his land from further storm damage, he stacked square stones one by one along the shoreline and filled the gaps with cement, working alone over a long period to raise the wall.

Appearance

The result was not a simple breakwater or fence but a wall with an unusual, castle-like form that resembles medieval European architecture, giving the site a rare, exotic atmosphere.

A Local Landmark

Maemi Castle has since become one of Geoje's tourist attractions, known for its distinctive coastal scenery. Visitors commonly stop throughout the site to take photos.
