Gyeryongsan National Park sits in South Chungcheong Province and was designated as South Korea's second national park in 1968. It covers about 65 square kilometers around Cheonhwangbong, the park's summit at 847 meters, and is reachable on a day trip from both Seoul and Daejeon.

Terrain and Name Origin

The mountain's ridgeline runs through around 16 peaks with roughly 10 valleys between them. The name Gyeryongsan, meaning "chicken dragon mountain," comes from the ridge's resemblance to a dragon wearing a rooster's comb. In traditional Korean geomancy the mountain was considered an auspicious site and was once proposed as the location for the capital of the Joseon dynasty; it also served as a sacred site for state rites.

Plant and Animal Life

The park supports 1,121 recorded plant species, 1,867 insect species, and 645 animal species. Eleven of the animal species are classified as endangered, including the otter, marten, common buzzard, and black woodpecker.
