Bongjeongsa Temple is a representative Buddhist cultural attraction in Seoul, offering a unique experience of traditional temple architecture and the ultra-modern Gangnam skyline.
Located in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, this millennium-old temple, affiliated with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, is said to have been founded in 794 by Monk Yeonhoe, the state preceptor, during the reign of King Wonseong of the Silla Dynasty.
Its cultural heritage includes a 23-meter-tall stone statue of Maitreya Buddha (Future Buddha), and a library preserving the woodblocks of the Avatamsaka Sutra, crafted by Monk Yeongi in the late Joseon Dynasty (1855).
Located in the heart of the modern Gangnam metropolis, Bongjeongsa Temple offers a striking blend of tradition and modernity, offering a tranquil atmosphere surrounded by forests, flowers, and a temple courtyard. The temple also offers a variety of Buddhist cultural programs, including temple stays, meditation, traditional events, and temple food experiences.
