Travel Map: Seoul
Seonyudo Park | 선유도공원
A former water treatment plant turned ecological park on an island in the Han River
Introduction
An old water purification plant on a small island between Yeouido and Hapjeong. Instead of tearing it down, the city kept the concrete bones and let nature take over. Ivy-covered columns, water gardens in old filtration tanks, and Han River views on all sides.
Worth Visiting?
Yes. It is not flashy, but walking through old industrial structures slowly being reclaimed by plants is genuinely memorable. Quiet, photogenic, and unlike anything else in Seoul. The view toward Yeouido from the island is fantastic, especially around sunset when the skyline lights up across the water.
Not a full-day destination. Pair it with Yanghwa Hangang Park, Mangwon Market, or Mangwon Hangang Park for a solid half day.
Highlights
Garden of Green Columns | 녹색기둥의 정원
The park’s signature spot. The roof of an old reservoir was removed, leaving rows of concrete columns standing in the open. Ivy has wrapped around them over the years. Lush and green in summer, bare and sculptural in winter.
Garden of Time | 시간의 정원
The best-preserved section of the old plant. Grey concrete walls, exposed rebar, plants growing through cracks. The park does not try to hide its industrial past here.
Water Playground | 환경물놀이터
A shallow wading area for kids using water purified by the park’s own aquatic gardens. Popular with families in summer.
Hangang Story Hall | 이야기관
A small exhibition space in the old pump building covering the history of the island and the water plant. Quick stop, worth it if you are curious about the before and after. Closed Mondays.
Seonyudo Bridge | 선유교
The pedestrian bridge connecting the island to the Yanghwa side. Designed by French architect Rudy Ricciotti and completed in 2002. A pleasant walk on its own, especially at sunset.
Local Tips
- Sunset is the best time. The west-facing Yeouido skyline view across the river is the highlight of the visit.
- Weekday mornings are peaceful. Weekends get busier, especially during cherry blossom season.
- Give yourself about 1.5 hours to walk through the whole park.
- Bring drinks and snacks. There is a cafe but options are limited.
- Cherry blossoms here (late March to early April) are quieter than Yeouido. Locals come here when Yeouido gets too crowded.
- The park stays open until midnight. It has a completely different feel after dark.
Getting There
By Subway (Recommended)
- Seonyudo Station (Line 9), Exit 2. Follow signs to Seonyudo Bridge. Cross the pedestrian bridge to the island. About 10 minutes total.
- Dangsan Station (Line 2 / Line 9), Exit 1. Longer route but useful if you are coming from Line 2.
