Travel Map: Seoul
Nodeul Island | 노들섬
A small island in the middle of the Han River, built around music and sunsets
Introduction
An artificial island sitting between Yongsan and Noryangjin, connected by Hangang Bridge. Reopened in 2019 as a music-focused cultural space after decades of being abandoned. A grass lawn, a live music venue, cafes, and Han River views on all sides.
Worth Visiting?
Yes, if you like the idea of sitting on a lawn in the middle of a river with a beer and a sunset. The island is small enough to walk around in 20 minutes, but the vibe makes you want to stay longer. The Live House hosts solid indie and live music events, and there are a few good cafes and restaurants scattered across the building.
It is not a full-day destination. Think of it as a stop you pair with something else. Yongsan, Noryangjin Fish Market, or a Han River walk.
Important: Soundscape construction is underway (see below). The lower waterfront area is currently closed, and the upper section (Live House, cafes, restaurants) remains open. Check the website before going.
Highlights
Soundscape by Thomas Heatherwick (Under Construction)
- A major redesign by Thomas Heatherwick (who designed the Vessel in New York). A soundwave-shaped skywalk will wrap around the entire island.
- Broke ground October 2025, targeting 2028 completion.
- I think this becomes Seoul’s Sydney Opera House once it is done.
Live House
A 456-seat (708 standing) music venue with proper sound and lighting. One of Seoul’s better mid-sized concert halls. Check the event calendar on the website. Indie showcases, weekend concerts, and occasional bigger acts.
The Lawn | 잔디마당
The real draw for most visitors. A big open grass area facing the river, perfect for picnics and sunset watching. Bring takeout or grab something from the convenience store downstairs. Currently affected by Soundscape construction. Check access before visiting.
Cafes and Food
Craft beer at Nodeul Pub (1F), wood-fired pizza at The Pizza Sound (2F), steak at Blue Metz (3F), and crispy gimbap at Manyeo Gimbap (2F). The convenience store on 1F sells Hangang ramyeon if you want the full river snack experience.
Local Tips
- Sunset is the best time to visit. The west-facing views over the Han River are the island’s biggest selling point.
- The island is small. You do not need to plan a lot of time here. An hour or two is enough.
- Monday is closed. Do not show up on a Monday.
- Check the Live House schedule before visiting. If there is a show you like, it is worth timing your visit around it.
- The convenience store on 1F is handy for drinks and snacks if you are heading to the lawn.
- Construction for Soundscape is ongoing. The lower waterfront area is closed as of late 2025. Upper floors (Live House, restaurants, cafes) stay open.
Getting There
By Subway (Recommended)
- Nodeul Station (Line 9), Exit 1. Walk toward the river and cross the pedestrian overpass to reach the island. About 5 minutes.
On Foot
- You can walk across Hangang Bridge from either side of the river using the pedestrian path. Nice walk, but exposed to weather.
